FRANK FOX
NSF ADVANCE Professor of Sociology |
Research Activities
Fox's research has focused on the ways in which the attainments
of women and men in science and engineering are not a simple function
of their individual characteristics, but are linked to organizational
factors, namely the characteristics of the settings in which scientists
are educated and in which they work. Fox will extend her current
research on faculty and
graduate students in doctoral granting departments science and
engineering, by analyzing patterns as they vary by gender. This
will involve analyses of quantitative data, as well as qualitative
data from site visits.
ADVANCE Activities
Fox aims to work with faculty and administrators to advance women
in science and engineering as follows:
A. Foster initiatives that help make more transparent the means for
advancement, through publication productivity, grants-proposal development,
mentoring, and critical transitions between academic stages and ranks.
B. Foster networks of communication, information, mentoring, and
exchange for women faculty and advancement.
C. Provide means for illustrating the links between women's roles
in professional societies and roles as faculty and administrators.
D. Take a dynamic approach to the advancement of women in science
and engineering -- so that the progress of women advances the institution.
Strategies include publicizing widely the achievements and attainments of
women at Georgia Tech.
